To ‘restart’ my e-mail experience I changed my e-mail address and vigorously took steps to look after the details being passed on to anyone. I then ‘trained’ every person who I gave my e-mail address to, to use it wisely and sparingly. I also configured an automatic response that swiftly told anyone sending me mail at what time of day I would be reading mail and if an e-mail should have my immediate attention to mark it as ‘Urgent’.

2. Get rid of alerts.

Disable every possible mechanism that can send you a perceptible alert. This includes mobile and
conventional telephones and types of alerts from e-mail such as visual alerts, warning sounds, display changes to your inbox folder and of course facing a window. Get a door on your office and put up a ‘do not disturb’ sign on it.

Obviously not everybody is allowed to work remotely as many jobs require employees to be at their office or travel to perform their duties in person. But for those of us who can or want to work remotely then I thought it would be useful to share what I have learned and share some practical directions by writing and publishing it on the Internet in the hope that I could give others valuable ways for adapting to remote working or managing remote workers.

I can tell you that there are many so called ’experts’ on the Internet who will try and sell you information for vast sums of cash, take my word for it you don’t have to do this.

During the past seven years I have immensely adapted my working processes to enable me to do all of my work remotely with a collection of internet tools and solid self discipline. One afternoon whilst surfing the net I found Quickbooks online and this made me aware of what just might be possible. Make sure that your payment (and related) applications vendors provide and maintain a PCI DSS compliance version for an agreed-on period of time and offer free upgrades as needed to ensure the merchant does not fall out of PCI compliance because their payment applications have fallen off the PA DSS white list. This is important, not only because it will save the retailer money but also because many retailers, hotel chains, educational institutions, etc., might not have “compliance updates” in their aggreements. These are common in financial services, government agencies, healthcare and other more heavily regulated industries. So it’s time to call the lawyers, contracts admin, global sourcing or whatever they’re called and review those aggreements.

What Good advice, Dave. Any comments from schools who have or have attempted to negotiate these “compliance update” clauses???
